Ecuador's Trade Agreements: A Step Towards Market Diversification
Ecuador is poised to enhance its international trade landscape by entering into two significant commercial agreements aimed at bolstering its presence in new markets and diversifying its export offerings. The country's Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, and Investments, Luis Alberto Jaramillo, has elaborated on the ongoing advancements within Ecuador's trade agenda and the promising opportunities linked to the upcoming agreements. The agreement with Canada is scheduled to be signed in mid-July, while the one with Morocco is anticipated to take place between September and October.
Minister Jaramillo highlighted the initial steps being taken to identify four key products from both nations that will form the basis of a partial free trade agreement. This preliminary phase is crucial, as it sets the stage for deeper discussions regarding the agreements’ terms and conditions, which are expected to be finalized within this month. For Ecuador, the key exports to Morocco are likely to include Ecuadorian flowers, shrimp, bananas, and wood products suitable for furniture. Additionally, tuna may also be considered as one of the principal products for trade. Morocco's global strength lies in its phosphate production, holding 70% of the world's reserves, which aligns with Ecuador's agricultural focus and robust agro-industrial sector.
Looking Ahead: Canada and Morocco Trade Agreements
While the agreement with Morocco is set to be finalized between September and October, the upcoming signing with Canada is on track for mid-July. Following this, the agreements will require approval from the Constitutional Court, which will determine whether they need to be presented to the National Assembly for further deliberation. Jaramillo noted that the signing ceremony with Canada is proposed to be held in Ottawa, featuring key figures such as Canadian Minister Maninder Sindhu, Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The exact dates for this event are still pending confirmation.
In addition to these developments, Minister Jaramillo is also planning a trip to South Korea in July or August, where renegotiating the tariff elimination schedules will be crucial. Meanwhile, a signing with China is expected to occur during the third or fourth week of June. Although the Ecuador-South Korea agreement currently includes an investment chapter under the Strategic Economic Cooperation Agreement (SECA), there are discussions to propose it as a bilateral investment treaty, which will require further negotiation.
Lastly, Ecuador will be formalizing a memorandum of understanding with Spain, focusing on cooperation with the State Secretariat for Tourism. Jaramillo emphasized Spain's significant role in the tourism sector and mentioned that there will be increased flight frequencies with Iberia, along with potential collaborations with Air Europa and the introduction of a new low-cost airline.
