Edgar Canet's Historic Win in Morocco
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Spanish racer Edgar Canet, riding for KTM, clinched his first victory in the World Rally-Raid Championship on Saturday at the Morocco Rally held in Zagora. Canet, who is only 21 years old, finished ahead of his teammate Daniel Sanders and American competitor Ricky Brabec from Honda, who had previously triumphed in the fifth stage of the event. This victory marks a significant milestone in Canet's career, as he becomes the youngest rider to secure a win at the Morocco Rally.
Canet's journey to this victory was characterized by a consistent performance throughout the competition. Although he did not win any of the individual stages, his steady approach allowed him to maintain a strong overall position. He began the rally by finishing second in the prologue, followed by third-place finishes in stages one and two, and a fourth-place finish in both stages three and five. Notably, he secured a second-place finish in stage four, which was crucial in allowing him to surpass his primary rival, Daniel Sanders, in the overall rankings. Ultimately, Canet finished ahead of Sanders by a mere 1 minute and 2 seconds, with Brabec trailing by 3 minutes and 32 seconds.
Reflecting on his achievement, Canet expressed his elation, stating, "This is a super important result for the future." He acknowledged the challenges he faced throughout the year, particularly following a rear wheel break during the previous Dakar rally, which made the season quite complex. "We fought hard to get to this point. I gave everything I had, and now I’m here. I’m super happy to compete alongside Daniel (Sanders)," he added, highlighting the camaraderie and competitive spirit shared among riders in the rally circuit.
