Edgar Morin: A Life Embraced in Marrakech's Warmth

Celebrating the Life of Edgar Morin

Edgar Morin, the renowned sociologist and philosopher, passed away on May 29 at the remarkable age of 104. He made the thoughtful decision to purchase a villa in Marrakech with his wife, where they would spend the colder months, a choice he shared in an interview back in March 2025. Morin, who was a prominent figure in French intellectual circles, recently released his final book titled _Y a-t-il des leçons de l’Histoire?_ in March 2025, and during its promotion, he opened up about his life experiences, including the poignant loss of his mother during his childhood and his enduring love story with his third wife, Sabah Abouessalam.

Throughout his illustrious career, Morin remained deeply connected to his Parisian roots, having been born there in the 1920s. However, it was his love for the Moroccan sunshine that led him to establish a second home away from the hustle and bustle of Paris. In his own words, he expressed, "The older I get, the more I crave sunlight." He found the grayness of Parisian winters unbearable, opting instead to escape to Marrakech, a city he described as having a delightful climate and beautiful light.

A Home in Marrakech

Morin's choice to reside in Marrakech was not merely a seasonal retreat but a significant decision that contributed to his happiness in his later years. He appreciated the serenity and warmth of the city, often preparing to leave Paris as soon as the temperatures dropped, only to return when the weather warmed up. His villa in Marrakech became a sanctuary where he and his wife could relax and enjoy life away from the dreariness of winter. In his interviews, he fondly recounted the joys of living in a place where the light was vibrant, and the atmosphere was inviting, reflecting a deep appreciation for the new chapter of life he embraced alongside his beloved wife.

Having spent his formative years in Paris, particularly in historic neighborhoods such as Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Morin was no stranger to the cultural and social vibrancy of the city. He recalled the exhilaration of witnessing the liberation of Paris during World War II, a moment etched in his memory with extraordinary emotion. This rich tapestry of experiences shaped his worldview and informed his intellectual pursuits, making him a cherished figure in both French and global academic circles.
