Enhancing Awareness Through Educational Visits
The Regional Multi-Service Company (SRM) Casablanca-Settat has actively engaged in initiatives aimed at raising awareness among stakeholders regarding the critical issues in wastewater management. This commitment was exemplified during an educational visit held on April 27, 2026, when a group of university students pursuing a bachelor's degree in applied geosciences from the Faculty of Sciences at Aïn Chock was invited to experience the inner workings of the Médiouna Wastewater Treatment Plant (STEP). The visit was not merely a tour; it was an immersive experience that covered the entire wastewater treatment cycle and the potential for reusing treated water.
Guided by Mohamed Hajraoui, the head of the wastewater treatment service at SRM, the students explored the three primary stages of treatment: pre-treatment, which removes coarse pollutants; biological treatment, which tackles fine pollutants and micropollutants; and lastly, a tertiary treatment utilizing ultrafiltration membranes. This state-of-the-art technology, which has been implemented for the first time in North Africa at this facility, ensures the production of purified water that meets the highest quality standards.
Building Connections Between Citizens and Water Management Professions
During the visit, Hajraoui emphasized the strategic significance of the Médiouna treatment facility for the region, stating, "Our goal is also to bridge the gap between citizens and the professions related to water and sanitation." The tour also highlighted the ongoing expansion project designed to accommodate the gradual increase in wastewater flows and pollutant loads in the area, further underscoring SRM's proactive approach to environmental sustainability and responsible water resource management.
For the participating students, the hands-on learning experience exceeded their expectations. Ngarori Yan-Dominique, one of the applied geosciences students, remarked, "We were amazed by the quality of water treatment. Experiencing each step, from pre-treatment to tertiary treatment, was truly enlightening." This educational initiative not only serves a pedagogical purpose but also reflects SRM Casablanca-Settat's tangible commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible management of water resources—issues that are more vital than ever on the regional agenda.
