Wanderlust and Personal History

My aesthetic is a blend of bohemian flair and maximalist design, characterized by thoughtfully arranged vignettes that adorn my living space. Imagine a harmonious fusion of the laid-back vibe of the West Coast, the warmth of the Southwest desert, and the rich, vibrant essence of distant locales like Morocco and Paris, all intertwined with lush greenery that seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor realms. A House with Character
My residence, which dates back to 1904, is nestled in the scenic Plat 1 of Roland Park. Growing up on a farm instilled in me an appreciation for environments that retain a touch of nature amidst urbanization. My childhood abode was a historic farmhouse, fostering my admiration for homes steeped in history, complete with intricate details, masterful craftsmanship, and unique character. I have embraced the original features of my house, such as the woodwork and built-ins, while integrating an eclectic mix of objects, textiles, and furniture sourced from my travels and vintage finds. This blend creates a narrative that reflects my journey and experiences.
My upbringing involved extensive outdoor activities, with my father nurturing a large vegetable garden and my mother cultivating enchanting flower beds—a foundation for my deep-seated love for plants. This early bond with nature has profoundly influenced my approach to home decor, where plants play as pivotal a role as vintage treasures and discovered artifacts. I relish the contrast of urban living enhanced by verdant, thoughtfully placed greenery, where each plant brings its own spirit, allowing me to craft spaces that convey distinct moods and atmospheres. When designing my home, I consider the interplay of light, color, texture, and the unique characteristics of each plant to create a visually engaging environment.
Among the most cherished items in my home are those that hold personal significance—pieces collected over time that evoke memories and a sense of belonging. Vintage mismatched china, glassware, and serving dishes, once belonging to my mother, are utilized for dinner gatherings, allowing me to create an ambiance that aligns with the occasion. One treasured item is the silver Champagne bucket gifted to my parents on their wedding day in 1968, a symbol of celebration and familial bonds.
My home serves as a canvas reflecting my passions for art, music, fashion, architecture, history, travel, and nature. These influences manifest in the layers of books, plants, artworks, and collected artifacts that populate the space. I enjoy juxtaposing contemporary with vintage pieces, allowing the environment to evolve organically, resulting in a home that feels lived-in rather than overly curated.
Textiles and rugs acquired during my travels, particularly from Morocco, are artfully layered throughout the house. My journeys through the coastal regions, the Atlas Mountains, and the expansive Sahara Desert have introduced me to the vibrant medinas and souks of Fes and Marrakesh, which are alive with color, energy, and craftsmanship. I even dedicated an extra suitcase to bring back unique finds that now enhance my home.
Art plays a significant role in my living space, with remarkable paintings from talented local artists adorning my walls. In the dining area, I proudly display "The New World" by Drury Bynum from his Arcana Obscura exhibition, alongside a thought-provoking screen print from Housewerks featuring a man in a gas mask—a powerful commentary on free expression. The primary bedroom features a dreamy painting of bees by Julia Niederman, and an organic wall piece titled "Kota" by Kat Jacobs of Feathers and Fibers. Additionally, one of my most treasured artworks is a Victor Vasarely print I stumbled upon years ago in a local antique shop, showcasing the legacy of this Hungarian-French pioneer of the Op Art movement.
