Emergency Medical Situation Forces EasyJet Flight Diversion
An EasyJet flight traveling from Basel, Switzerland, to Marrakech, Morocco, was unexpectedly diverted to Malaga, Spain, on Friday morning due to a medical emergency involving a passenger. The incident unfolded when an announcement was made onboard, calling for any doctors present to assist with the situation.
A 32-year-old passenger, who was part of a group celebrating a bachelor party, witnessed the unfolding emergency and expressed disappointment over the time lost during the diversion. He explained that they were looking forward to a short getaway weekend in Marrakech, and the unexpected delay reduced their time at the destination. "We had planned a brief stay for the weekend, and now we have less time on-site," he lamented.
The flight's crew acted promptly when a passenger required urgent medical attention, and fortunately, a doctor was aboard. According to the witness, when the doctor stood up to help, fellow passengers applauded in appreciation of his willingness to assist. Despite the initial medical response, the decision was made to reroute the aircraft to Malaga to ensure the passenger received appropriate medical care.
Passengers remained on board for approximately two hours during the unscheduled stop. "This layover felt like an eternity," the witness shared, highlighting the tension and uncertainty felt among travelers. The pilot later thanked the onboard physician during a public announcement, which received another round of applause from the passengers.
Reflecting on the experience, the witness remarked, "Fortunately, we did not have to return to Basel; otherwise, our getaway with friends would have been ruined." An EasyJet spokesperson later confirmed the diversion to Malaga, stating that the passenger was taken care of by medical services upon landing and was transported to a hospital.
