Empowering Moroccan Youth: EFE-Maroc and GIZ Collaborate for Sustainable Employment Opportunities

Joint Commitment to Youth Employment

EFE-Maroc, in partnership with GIZ Morocco, has reaffirmed its dedication to guiding young individuals towards sustainable employment opportunities while simultaneously fostering the development of a key sector essential for sustainable resource management and ecological transition in Morocco. This program is being implemented across various regions of the Kingdom, including Casablanca–Settat, Marrakech–Safi, Souss–Massa, and Tangier–Tetouan–Al Hoceima.

Approximately 6,200 young people have benefited from the employability enhancement program under the Cesar II project, executed by the Moroccan Foundation for Education and Employment (EFE-Maroc) in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). This impressive figure marks the successful culmination of an ambitious initiative aimed at strengthening youth employability in the strategically important water and sanitation sector, as highlighted by EFE-Maroc in a recent statement. The substantial number of beneficiaries serves as a testament to the program's impact. In this context, EFE-Maroc, together with GIZ, organized the closing ceremony for this program, which was launched in July 2024 amidst a significant demand for skills within this crucial sector for sustainable development.

The involvement of EFE-Maroc in the Cesar II project aimed to facilitate young people's access to professional opportunities in the field while also contributing to the sector's evolution through mobilization, awareness-raising, and training activities, as the statement indicates. It is noteworthy that this program has been implemented in several regions of the Kingdom, including Casablanca–Settat, Marrakech–Safi, Souss–Massa, and Tangier–Tetouan–Al Hoceima, allowing for the deployment of various initiatives designed to connect youth with sector opportunities. In this regard, training in soft skills was provided to enhance the transversal capabilities of nearly 600 new employees from the Regional Multi-Service Companies (SRM) in the Casablanca-Settat, Marrakech-Safi, and Souss-Massa regions, thus facilitating their professional integration.

Enhancing Sector Attractiveness

The program has also played a significant role in raising awareness among young people about careers in water and sanitation through three regional tours of the "Employment Caravan: Water and Sanitation." These tours engaged over 4,600 young individuals, focusing on the career prospects available in this sector and the skills sought by employers.

In a statement, EFE-Maroc's General Director, Houda Barakate, emphasized the importance of this program in guiding youth towards sustainable employment opportunities. "As we conclude this chapter of the employability enhancement program within the framework of the Cesar II project, we recognize the tangible impact of our partnership with GIZ," she stated. She further added that "in a sector as vital as water and sanitation, preparing youth – especially women – for future careers is not only a lever for employability but also a crucial contribution to water sovereignty and the resilience of our country."

Moreover, over 885 young individuals, with 56% being women, have benefited from training in job search techniques to better prepare them for the labor market. The program also led to the organization of a job fair, gathering nearly 200 participants and providing a platform for young talents to connect with industry stakeholders. In total, more than 6,200 youths have been informed or trained through this program, thereby enhancing the attractiveness of the water and sanitation sector for new generations.

Michael Kirchesch, the lead technical advisor for the Cesar II project at GIZ, noted that "water is a strategic pillar for Morocco in the face of climatic challenges, and through this program, German cooperation is addressing root issues by training a qualified youth capable of meeting market needs and supporting the sector's evolution." He expressed satisfaction with the achievements made alongside EFE-Maroc and its academic and professional partners, confirming their confidence in continuing this essential momentum. Through this cooperation, EFE-Maroc and GIZ Morocco reaffirm their shared commitment to guiding young people towards sustainable employment opportunities while contributing to the development of a sector crucial for sustainable resource management and ecological transition in Morocco.
