Transforming Lives Through Economic Empowerment
The recent expansion of the Mohammed VI Center for the Disabled in Agadir signifies a clear ambition: to transcend traditional assistance and establish a robust platform for social and economic inclusion. During the ordinary session held on July 6, 2026, the Souss-Massa regional council adopted twenty-four key points, among which two significant initiatives stand out. The first is the extension of the Mohammed VI Center for the Disabled, and the second is the creation of a crafts zone in Aït Melloul, backed by an investment of 180 million dirhams. This strategic move reflects the region's commitment to enhancing social inclusion, promoting craftsmanship, and fostering territorial development through concrete actions.
The Mohammed VI Center's expansion, a collaborative effort involving the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the regional wilaya, and the regional council, aims to provide modern vocational training spaces, a socio-economic integration platform for young workers with disabilities, production and marketing facilities open to the public, and entrepreneurial support for project holders. The inclusion of a fully equipped covered sports facility underscores the belief that sports serve as a vital lever for social inclusion and personal development, linking physical well-being to broader life opportunities.
Distinct from conventional disability assistance programs, this initiative embraces an economic orientation by focusing on training, integration, support, production, and commercialization. This approach fosters autonomy rather than dependency, enabling beneficiaries to actively engage in the region's economic development rather than merely being passive recipients of aid. In a region characterized by a dense and diverse economic fabric, this strategy becomes increasingly relevant, empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Revitalizing Craftsmanship in Souss-Massa
The second initiative aims to establish a crafts zone in Azrou, located within the commune of Aït Melloul, which will receive 30% of its funding from the regional council, amounting to 180 million dirhams. This new infrastructure, spanning approximately 22,000 square meters, will feature exhibition spaces, commercial premises, professional workshops, shared areas, and socio-community facilities. The crafts sector in Souss-Massa, often undervalued compared to agriculture and tourism, is home to thousands of artisans who frequently work under challenging conditions, lacking adequate infrastructure, commercial visibility, and the capacity to organize into competitive networks.
This initiative addresses these critical gaps directly. By enhancing organizational structures, improving working conditions, bolstering skills, and increasing competitiveness, the project sets precise and measurable objectives. Its inclusion in the 2022-2027 Regional Development Program adds further coherence, positioning it as part of a broader strategy for economic modernization that leverages underappreciated sectors.
Both projects embody a shared vision of development that transcends mere macroeconomic indicators. They focus on the margins, exclusions, and untapped potentials within the community—catering to people with disabilities seeking employment and artisans striving for modernization. Ultimately, these initiatives aim to broaden the productive base of the region while promoting the inclusion of its most vulnerable categories.
