Significance of the Fourth National Women's Summit
Amira Benkhadra, the President of the National Federation of Women of the Assembly, articulated the vital role of the Fourth National Women’s Summit as a pivotal organizational and political platform aimed at revitalizing the discourse surrounding women's roles in social and developmental reforms. Speaking at the opening session of the summit in Marrakech, under the theme "Women at the Heart of Major Social and Developmental Reforms," she emphasized that this gathering serves as a confluence for proactive women who are committed to their roles in community building and contributing to the large-scale initiatives currently underway in Morocco.
Advancements in Women’s Rights and Societal Roles
During her address, Benkhadra underscored that Moroccan women’s issues are an integral part of a democratic journey led by King Mohammed VI, which focuses on enhancing their status as essential partners alongside men in achieving economic and social transformation. She articulated that the elevation of women's conditions is fundamental to the construction of a modern and equitable Morocco, aligning with royal directives and the spirit of the constitution. Furthermore, she highlighted that Moroccan women have demonstrated exceptional competencies and have made significant contributions across various developmental sectors.
Benkhadra noted that the National Rally of Independents has prioritized women's empowerment, placing it at the core of its political project, alongside the dynamic efforts led by the National Federation of Women of the Assembly aimed at training, advocacy, and promoting women’s presence in political life. She reviewed the transformative changes Morocco has experienced over recent decades, particularly during the reign of King Mohammed VI, which have resulted in substantial reforms including the family code, the enhancement of women’s social and economic rights, and the expansion of their presence in elected institutions and decision-making positions.
The current government continues to implement significant social projects that place families, and women specifically, at the forefront of its agenda, through reforms in education and healthcare systems. It has also activated direct social support programs, in addition to housing support initiatives, investment stimulation, and job creation. Benkhadra provided statistical data reflecting the impact of these programs, indicating that approximately 4 million families benefit from social support, totaling around 12.5 million individuals, including 5.5 million children and 420,000 widows, alongside over one million seniors over the age of 60, with substantial financial allocations dedicated to these initiatives.
In concluding her remarks, Benkhadra urged women to persist in engaging in political and social work and to contribute actively to the reform and development processes that enhance the role of women as key partners in building a dignified and progressive Morocco. She emphasized that women's economic empowerment is contingent upon overcoming various challenges, particularly concerning access to financing and training, especially in rural areas, and called for bolstering women-led initiatives and enhancing entrepreneurship.
