Innovative Approaches to Peacekeeping Training
On May 22, the Boutros-Ghali Observatory (OBG) for Peacekeeping, as part of its REFFOP project (French-speaking Expertise and Training Network for Peace Operations), in collaboration with the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), conducted a workshop focused on sharing experiences and best practices among French-speaking training centers in peacekeeping. This workshop, titled "From Commitment to Impact: Training for Peace Operations as a Strategic Lever to Accelerate the Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda," aimed to enhance the capabilities of these centers in their crucial role in peacekeeping efforts.
The initiative follows the first strategic reflection workshop held on May 20, 2022, which revolved around the challenges faced by UN peace operations, including regionalization, parallel forces, and externalization. This earlier gathering resulted in a call for training project proposals from OIF in partnership with the UN and OBG, encouraging collaboration in the execution of selected projects. The upcoming workshop on May 23, 2024, titled "Innovating in Peacekeeping Training," will be held alongside another seminar that seeks to adapt training models for uniformed personnel in peace operations to meet contemporary challenges.
Building on Past Successes for Future Impact
The workshop on May 22, 2026, is designed to build upon the outcomes of previous editions and to continue promoting the contributions of French-speaking training centers to peace operations. It focuses on sharing experiences and best practices while examining how training can significantly expedite the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, advocating for full participation of women in peace operations and reinforcing the integration of gender perspectives in their mandates.
This workshop coincides with the Francophone Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping, hosted by Morocco and France in Rabat on May 20, 2026, which brought together Foreign and Defense Ministers, along with representatives from international and regional organizations, to discuss current challenges and contribute to ongoing reflections on the future of peacekeeping. Training and deployment preparation were central themes of this significant event for Francophone diplomacy in peacekeeping. Additionally, it was preceded by an OBG seminar focused on adapting UN peacekeeping efforts amid reform and implementation challenges.
