Strengthening Water Security in Marrakech
The city of Marrakech is set to bolster its water security through a significant project aimed at transporting desalinated water from the seawater desalination plant in Safi. This initiative is nearing completion and has progressed to advanced stages, positioning it as one of the most crucial projects dedicated to supplying potable water in the region. According to the "Lama Dialna" platform, which is associated with the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the project intends to transport approximately 3.2 cubic meters of water per second—equating to nearly 100 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually—from the Safi desalination facility, which has been developed by the OCP Group (Office Cherifien des Phosphates).
The infrastructure for this ambitious project relies on a network of steel pipelines stretching over 185.3 kilometers, complemented by multiple storage facilities, control structures, and pumping stations. The total cost of this undertaking amounts to 4.2 billion dirhams, funded by the national budget and the Ministry of the Interior.
The regional multi-service company, Marrakech Safi, is overseeing the project, which includes the establishment of three pumping stations and several intermediate reservoirs before the water reaches the main reservoir, "Ram Ram," located north of Marrakech. This arrangement is designed to ensure a consistent flow of water and uninterrupted supply.
Once the water reaches the Marrakech vicinity, it will be distributed across the city’s various networks, contributing to a reduction in the energy demands associated with the transportation process. Additionally, two strategic conduits will supply the "Ram Ram" reservoirs and the Ourika Road reservoirs, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all distribution areas within the city.
