Ensuring Food Safety Along Highways: A Call for Action

In a recent inquiry directed to the minister, a parliamentarian emphasized the critical importance of adhering to health safety regulations in restaurants and food outlets located near highways. This issue is particularly significant given the substantial increase in travel and mobility across various national roadways. The parliamentarian raised concerns about the rising number of informal eateries and restaurants that have emerged close to rest areas and gas stations, especially in the Marrakech-Safi region. These establishments often operate under questionable conditions regarding cleanliness, food safety, and the quality of the food being offered, compounded by a lack of regular inspections.

The parliamentarian specifically pointed out that the situation is particularly evident around the rest areas of Ben Guerir and Sidi Bou Othmane. The surroundings of these locations are witnessing a proliferation of informal food outlets that attract many road users. This trend raises significant worries about food preparation and preservation practices, as well as whether these establishments possess the necessary licenses and adhere to established health safety standards. The growing concern is underscored by reports of food poisoning incidents occurring in various regions across the country, alongside the potential health risks posed to citizens due to inadequate oversight and regulation, particularly during the busy summer months and holiday seasons.

Furthermore, the parliamentarian questioned the minister about the measures and actions the ministry intends to implement, in collaboration with relevant sectors, to enhance the monitoring of restaurants and food outlets located at highway rest areas, particularly in the Marrakech-Safi region. Ensuring compliance with health safety standards and protecting the well-being of road users is of utmost importance.
