Environmental Concerns Surrounding Fes' Ain Beida Dump: A Call for Action

In a written question directed to the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, El-Hanawi sought clarification on the persistent problems despite previous commitments made to address these critical concerns.
Established in 2004, the Ain Beida landfill has evolved over the years into a significant source of distress for many residential areas, particularly following the urban expansion of Fes. The proximity of the landfill to vital neighborhoods and institutions has led to unbearable odors and other negative impacts, notably affecting the Hassan II University Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, as well as areas along the Safrou Road, Imouzzer Road, and the Narjis district. This situation has raised alarming health risks for the local population, prompting El-Hanawi to demand the minister outline the practical measures and timeline for executing the previously pledged commitments. Furthermore, she insisted on the urgent need for immediate actions to mitigate the environmental and health damages caused by the Ain Beida landfill for the benefit of the surrounding communities.
