Leadership Change in Moroccan Women's Football
In a significant shift in leadership, Éric Blahic has been appointed as the new head coach of the Morocco Women’s National Football Team, succeeding Jorge Vilda, who previously held the position. This transition comes as the team gears up for two crucial friendly matches against Uzbekistan scheduled for October 9 and 12, 2026, marking the dawn of a new chapter for Moroccan women's football. Blahic, a seasoned coach with extensive experience in various French clubs, will take the reins in preparation for the team's participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in Brazil, set to begin in just over eight months. The draw for the tournament is slated to occur on December 11 in Rio de Janeiro.
Éric Blahic's Coaching Journey and Future Aspirations
Jorge Vilda's last campaign with the Moroccan team was during the recent Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, held in Morocco from July to August, where the team reached the semi-finals, ultimately securing their qualification for the upcoming World Cup. Under Vilda’s leadership, the Moroccan side demonstrated considerable growth, finishing fourth in the tournament, and showcasing their potential on the continental stage. Blahic, who has never led a national team before, brings a wealth of experience from his time as an assistant coach at prestigious clubs such as Guingamp, Sochaux, Paris Saint-Germain, Bordeaux, and Nantes, as well as with the French Women's National Team. His first challenge will be to familiarize himself with a squad of 31 players during the upcoming friendlies, which will serve as a springboard for their preparations towards the World Cup. The Moroccan team aims to replicate their historic performance from their inaugural participation in the 2023 Women's World Cup, where they advanced to the Round of 16, facing off against the French team, then coached by Blahic himself.
