Stronger EU Response to Migration Crisis in Ceuta
The European People's Party (EPP), the predominant political group within the European Parliament and associated with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has recently called for a more assertive response from the European Union towards Morocco in light of the ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta. According to sources from the conservative faction within the Parliament, this proposed response may involve suspending the trade agreement between the EU and Morocco, a pact that positions Morocco as a preferred partner. Alongside this, the EPP is demanding that Morocco fulfill its obligations regarding border control, returns, and migration cooperation. This proposal is expected to be put to a vote in the European Parliament this Thursday.
It is important to note that the current wording of the resolution does not explicitly mention the suspension of the trade agreement between the EU and Morocco; however, insiders from the parliamentary group have indicated that such a possibility is implicitly included in the draft. The document remains open to negotiations, as the EPP seeks to reach an agreement with pro-European groups, including Socialists, Renew Europe liberals, and the Greens, which means that the content could undergo amendments prior to being presented to the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
From the Socialist ranks, opposition to this proposal is anticipated, as they argue that the primary focus should be on protecting minors arriving in Ceuta and individuals seeking political asylum. They also contend that there is no substantial evidence linking Rabat to the events that transpired on July 29 and 30.
Upcoming Visit to Ceuta
In a related development, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Spanish Popular Party, is set to return to Ceuta on September 21, marking his fourth visit since the mass influx of migrants in late July. This visit aims to "Europeanize the issue" faced by the autonomous city due to what they describe as the irresponsible and negligent actions of the government. This "Europeanization" will primarily involve bringing the matter to the discussion floor of the European Parliament.
Feijóo has been in contact with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, following the crisis. He will be visiting Ceuta accompanied by Manfred Weber, the President of the European People's Party, and Dolors Montserrat, the Secretary General of the organization and a Member of the European Parliament representing the Popular Party.
