EU's Kaja Kallas to Strengthen Ties During Historic Visit to Morocco

Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, is set to embark on a significant diplomatic mission to Morocco on Thursday and Friday. This marks her inaugural visit to the North African nation, which shares a border with Spain, since taking office. According to the European External Action Service (EEAS), Kallas will engage in a bilateral meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, followed by a joint press conference from the capital city of Rabat.

During her time in Morocco, Kallas will also meet with women leaders from various sectors, emphasizing the EU's commitment to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. Additionally, she plans to visit the Euro-Mediterranean University in Fez, where she will engage in a dialogue with a group of students, fostering educational exchanges and understanding between the EU and Morocco.

Reinforcing Strategic Partnerships

This visit builds on a previous meeting between Kallas and Bourita in Brussels on January 29, held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the EU-Morocco Association Agreement. At that meeting, both parties highlighted the depth and vitality of the ties that connect their peoples, acknowledging that these connections have continually strengthened over the years to serve mutual interests and shared aspirations for a future characterized by prosperity, peace, and security. In a joint statement released following their discussions, both sides reaffirmed the significance of this privileged, enduring, and multidimensional strategic partnership.

Furthermore, the European representatives reiterated their commitment to Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, deeming it a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable foundation for future negotiations. They underscored the necessity of resuming dialogue without preconditions and advancing toward a political solution that recognizes the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

In addition to regional concerns, both parties addressed various international issues, including the Middle East, where they reaffirmed their support for a two-state solution between Palestine and Israel. They also agreed on the need for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, reiterating their commitment to uphold the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while calling for respect for international law.
