Significant Progress on the High-Speed Train Project
The Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel Samad Qiyuh, recently unveiled important updates regarding the ambitious high-speed train project that will connect Marrakech to Agadir. He confirmed that all technical and engineering studies for this strategic initiative have been fully completed, paving the way for advancing to more progressive phases of implementation. During a parliamentary session, the minister revealed that the total estimated cost of the project is approximately 55 billion dirhams. He highlighted that the actual commencement of construction is contingent upon securing the necessary financial resources and establishing specialized technical partnerships in coordination with the National Railway Office.
Qiyuh elaborated on the proposed route of the railway, which traverses the challenging terrains of the High Atlas Mountains. This geographical complexity presents intricate engineering challenges, with significant portions of the anticipated works involving tunnels and bridges. Furthermore, he provided insights into the extension of the Al Boraq line towards Marrakech, indicating that the work's progress between Kenitra and Marrakech stands at around 30%. He assured that the pace of construction is in accordance with the predetermined schedule, with the first high-speed train expected to reach the Red City by September 2029.
Enhancing Connectivity Across Major Urban Centers
Additionally, Qiyuh stated that the new vision for the Al Boraq project aims to enhance rapid connectivity between key urban hubs within the kingdom, including Casablanca and Rabat. This will incorporate stops at Mohammed V Airport and the Grand Stadium in Benslimane, ultimately leading to Marrakech. This initiative aligns with a national vision to develop transportation infrastructure and reduce travel times between major cities. The government's commitment to improving rail connectivity is seen as a pivotal step towards fostering economic growth and enhancing the overall travel experience for citizens and tourists alike.
