World-Class Athletes Set for Doha Diamond League
The Doha Diamond League, scheduled for Friday, June 19, promises to be a thrilling event as it features full podiums from the World Championships in both the men’s javelin and men’s triple jump. Originally planned for early May, the meeting has been rescheduled to June, bringing together some of the most formidable athletes of the season, including numerous global champions. Among the anticipated highlights is the men’s javelin, where the 2025 World Championships podium will be fully represented. World champion Keshorn Walcott, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, and world bronze medallist Curtis Thompson will reignite their rivalry. They will be joined by Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who is set to make his season debut, and the emerging talent from Sri Lanka, Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who has become one of the standout performers of 2026.
Pathirage arrives in Doha with an impressive record as the world leader following his remarkable victory in Rome earlier this month, where he threw a stunning 92.62 meters, placing him eighth on the all-time world list. With five wins in six competitions this season, his only setback was a narrow defeat to Peters in his inaugural Diamond League appearance in Rabat. The Doha venue has a storied reputation for producing remarkable javelin performances, with several athletes achieving their personal bests in the Qatari capital. Notably, Chopra has previously joined the exclusive 90-meter club in Doha with a personal best of 90.23 meters, while Peters and Jakub Vadlejch also recorded impressive throws in a memorable event in 2022. Given Pathirage's recent form and the favorable conditions in Doha, spectators can anticipate an extraordinary display of javelin prowess.
Triple Jump Showdown and Diverse Events Await
Another exciting reunion of World Championship podium finishers will take place in the men’s triple jump. Pedro Pichardo and Andrea Dallavalle will open their seasons against Lazaro Martinez, who completed the podium in Tokyo last year. They will be joined by world indoor silver medallist Jordan Scott, who has achieved a season-best jump of 17.66 meters, and world indoor bronze medallist Yasser Triki, who recorded a best of 17.32 meters this season. The women’s triple jump is equally impressive, led by world indoor and outdoor champion Leyanis Perez Hernandez and Olympic champion Thea Lafond. Additionally, Saly Sarr, the world indoor bronze medallist, and Davisleydi Velazco, who has triumphed in her last five competitions including a 14.85 meters jump at the Oslo Diamond League, will add to the competitive atmosphere.
In the women’s 400 meters, Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino will compete in her first Diamond League race of 2026, going up against Olympic bronze medallist Natalia Bukowiecka and Cuba’s Roxana Gomez. The men’s 110 meters hurdles will feature world champion Cordell Tinch alongside Jamal Britt, who recently made headlines by joining the sub-13-second club with a time of 12.99 seconds at the Los Angeles Grand Prix. Emma Zapletalova aims to maintain her unbeaten streak in the women’s 400 meters hurdles, having set the world lead and Slovakian record at 52.58 seconds this season. The men’s 200 meters will see Makanakaishe Charamba looking to capitalize on his recent personal best of 19.88 seconds, while the women’s 800 meters will showcase Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma and fellow Ethiopian Nigist Getachew, among other top contenders.
The pole vault event will include Greece’s world silver medallist Emmanouil Karalis and home favorite Mutaz Barshim in the men’s high jump, who is eager to surpass his season’s best of 2.23 meters. A robust Ethiopian contingent will also feature prominently in the women’s 5000 meters, led by Likina Amebaw, who clinched victory at the Rome Diamond League with a world-leading personal best of 14:18.41, and in the women’s 1500 meters, headed by Birke Haylom, who won the Shanghai Diamond League. In the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase, two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali is set to compete against Olympic bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot and 2024 Diamond League champion Amos Serem, promising an exhilarating evening of world-class athletics in Doha.
