Taoufiq Izeddiou: A Pioneer of Contemporary Dance in Morocco
Taoufiq Izeddiou stands out in the world of dance as a multifaceted talent, serving as a choreographer, dancer, educator, and the visionary behind the International Contemporary Dance Festival "On Marche" held in his hometown of Marrakech. Many of the dancers from this program have gone on to join his dance company, Anania Danses, based in Aix-en-Provence. One of his hallmark initiatives is "100 Pas Presque," a groundbreaking project that brings dance into public spaces, encouraging community participation in the art form. This project was first introduced during the second edition of the "On Marche" festival in 2007, representing a milestone in the history of public dance gatherings in Morocco. The event entails blocking off a roundabout in Marrakech where dancers and musicians create a vibrant spectacle for the public, with a charismatic leader known as the "shock commander" guiding onlookers through the experience, explaining the significance of what they are witnessing.
