Fostering Intercultural Dialogue in Marrakech
Nestled within the historic walls of a riad in the vibrant medina of Marrakech, the Maison Denise Masson has progressively established itself as a pivotal space for reflection and creativity dedicated to intercultural dialogue. In a collaborative effort, the Institut Français du Maroc (IFM), the Centre Jacques Berque (CJB), and the Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) have renewed their call for projects for 2027, focusing on the theme of religious matters and their interactions with the societies of Morocco, the Maghreb, and the broader Mediterranean region. This initiative is designed to encourage a diverse array of creators to engage in meaningful dialogue through their work.
The call for projects is open until September 30, 2026, inviting authors, researchers, artists, academics, filmmakers, screenwriters, and Francophone creators from all nationalities to participate. Two main programs are being offered: a writing residency that welcomes projects in literature, poetry, theater, cinema, web series, podcasts, and contemporary dance, as well as a research and artistic creation residency that accommodates both individual projects and collaborations between researchers and artists. These residencies are not only about creative time; they aim to foster exchanges with the local environment.
Engagement with the Local Community
Applicants will be required to demonstrate the relevance of their projects in relation to Marrakech and its cultural, academic, or professional ecosystem. Moreover, they must propose a mediation component intended for the public, which can take the form of meetings, workshops, or exchanges with local schools, universities, or residents of the medina. A public presentation is also planned at the conclusion of each residency, allowing for community engagement and the sharing of creative outcomes.
Projects will be hosted at the Maison Denise Masson, also known as the House of Dialogue. This venue is deeply connected to the legacy of Denise Masson (1901-1994), a French translator of the Quran and a specialist in comparative religions, whose work continues to serve as a reference point in dialogue between monotheistic traditions. The organizers have indicated that particular attention will be given to proposals that contribute to a better understanding of her journey and intellectual heritage.
Residencies will last a maximum of one month and include on-site accommodation, transportation allowances, daily stipends, and financial support aimed at mediation activities or the restitution project. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of representatives from the Institut Français du Maroc, the Centre Jacques Berque, and Cadi Ayyad University. Selections will be made exclusively based on submitted files, without prior interviews, and the results will be announced on December 1, 2026.
