Mehdi Melhaoui's Captivating Exhibition at GVCC Gallery

The GVCC Gallery in Casablanca is currently showcasing an intriguing new exhibition by artist Mehdi Melhaoui, titled "Never Full," which runs until October 27. This exhibition features a remarkable collection of sculptures and wall panels created between 2019 and 2024, with a segment of these works categorized under the title "Westcelerity," emphasizing the central theme of the artist's research. Melhaoui, a Casablanca native, has been developing his artistic practice for over a decade, focusing on the evolution of landscapes and their transformations. He graduated from the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Montpellier in 2010 and has since described himself as a "landscape ecologist," delving into the intricate relationships between spatial organization, geological processes, and their impacts on ecosystems and human interactions with the environment.

A Deep Dive into Landscape Mutations

In his artistic exploration, Melhaoui often refers to the concept of "landscape mutations," a term he uses to describe the ever-changing mountains, deserts, and seas that surround us. His sculptures serve as poignant reminders of our fragile planet, highlighting a diminishing awareness of the living world. The forms and folds of his works evoke the raw surfaces of arid landscapes, the tumultuous drapery of a stormy sea, and the patterns etched into the sand by the wind. According to the artist's presentation text, these sculptures frequently emerge from a singular line or an interrupted movement, aiming to capture the moment where a shape appears to be suspended in time. Additionally, he incorporates anthropomorphic accents into his works, inviting viewers to confront a presence that resonates deeply with their own existence.

Melhaoui's artistic repertoire encompasses sculpture, installation, and photography, with a notable focus on materials such as bronze, steel, and stone. In 2011, he had a solo exhibition titled "Points d’ancrage" at the Lattara archaeological site and Henri Prades Museum in Lattes. His artwork "Boat," acquired by Montpellier Agglomeration in 2010, is permanently displayed in the museum's garden. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including "Alerte Météo" (2010-2011) and "La Vie aquatique" (2017) at the Regional Contemporary Art Museum in Sérignan, as well as "Passeur acte 2" (2014) at the Odile Ouizeman Gallery in Paris. In Casablanca, the Venise Cadre Gallery dedicated exhibitions to him, including "L’échappée du temps" in 2014 and "Ninfa" in 2017. Moreover, Melhaoui has undertaken public commissions, such as "Vague S11" in Marseillan in 2013 and "Vague S7" in Palavas-les-Flots in 2015.
