Investigating the Bioactive Properties of Teucrium polium

This study presents an in-depth analysis of the bioactive compounds, antioxidant capabilities, and antibacterial properties of the medicinal plant _Teucrium polium_ L. _ssp. thymoïdes_, part of the Lamiaceae family. Researchers utilized various extraction solvents including methanol, ethanol, and dichloromethane to effectively identify essential phenolic compounds and flavonoids through advanced techniques such as Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The findings reveal that the extracts possess significant antioxidant activity, with methanol extraction yielding the highest total phenolic content measured at 185.6 ± 5.2 mg GAE/g, alongside the most potent DPPH radical scavenging effect, with an IC50 value of 45.3 ± 2.1 µg/mL. Moreover, antibacterial assessments demonstrated robust activity against _Staphylococcus aureus_, showing an inhibition zone of 18.5 ± 0.8 mm and a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 125 µg/mL, while _Escherichia coli_ exhibited an inhibition zone of 15.3 ± 0.6 mm and an MIC of 250 µg/mL.

To further understand the electronic characteristics of the identified compounds, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed. The analysis of the HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and quantum chemical descriptors aligns with the observed antioxidant and antibacterial activities, reinforcing the traditional applications of this plant. The implications of these results underscore the potential use of _Teucrium polium_ in pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors as a natural source of antioxidants and antibacterial agents.

The authors advocate for additional research to investigate seasonal and geographical variations in the bioactive composition of _Teucrium polium_ and to delve deeper into the mechanisms that facilitate its therapeutic effects. This exploration could significantly enhance the understanding of this plant's medicinal properties and its applications in modern medicine.
