Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence at the Fes Conference

Artificial Intelligence at the Fes Conference: A Global Dialogue

The Euro-Mediterranean University in Fes, renowned for its striking architecture and expansive grounds located in the heart of the historic city of Fes, which serves as Morocco's cultural capital, is not only an academic institution but also a global hub for diverse disciplines. The university, distinguished by its remarkable faculty from around the world and its vibrant international presence, has become a scientific and cultural platform. This was particularly evident during the recent conference focused on 'The Future of Human Civilization in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,' which attracted speakers from seventy countries across four continents, including scientists, leaders, politicians, and cultural ambassadors. The discourse surrounding the positive aspects of artificial intelligence that can benefit humanity was a key theme, with optimism prevailing over the concerns expressed by some regarding its development and application. Dr. Muhammad Al-Issa, the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, emphasized the importance of upholding principles and values in the context of artificial intelligence usage.

One of the conference's most significant recommendations, articulated by Professor Mustafa Bou Samina, the university's president, was the urgent need to advance artificial intelligence within a framework that respects universal values, human dignity, and transparency. Over the course of two days, three lecture halls buzzed with attendees, including Moroccan university students eager to glean insights from esteemed thinkers. The conference schedule began early in the morning and extended into the afternoon, creating a hive of activity characterized by engaging discussions and networking opportunities, all complemented by visits to Fes's historic sites, which embody the spirit of Morocco.

A Cultural Experience Amidst Intellectual Exchange

The Fes Conference served as a unique opportunity to connect with influential minds from various fields, sharing their rich experiences. The sessions were streamed live on United Nations screens, showcasing the international significance of the event. Visitors to Fes are often met with the city's renowned hospitality, where warm welcomes and a rich historical tapestry add to the allure of the experience. During my time in Fes, I was fortunate to meet the Romanian Ambassador to UNESCO and the Spanish Ambassador, who expressed pride in the contributions of Saudi Princess Haifa bint Abdulaziz Al-Muqrin, the Saudi Ambassador to Spain, and her diplomatic initiatives abroad. Our discussions also touched upon cultural connections, with reminisces of the legendary Andalusian figures, further enriching our exchanges.

No account of Morocco would be complete without mentioning its exquisite cuisine, which reflects the country’s culture and agricultural bounty. The Moroccan dining experience, from the iconic fish pastilla to the myriad of tagines and grilled dishes, showcases the artistry of Moroccan culinary traditions. The dining table is often adorned with numerous dishes, reminiscent of the lavish feasts of Andalusian governors, where the number of courses could be determined by the table settings themselves.

Visiting the Euro-Mediterranean University revealed its impressive facilities, including meticulously maintained sports fields, a large swimming pool, and bright student lounges designed to foster an inviting atmosphere for learning. In a world where the pace of life is relentlessly quickening, the wisdom of humanity remains the guiding compass for the future. It is essential that decisions are led by human judgment rather than artificial intelligence, which must operate under the ethical standards of humanity to remain a reliable tool under conscious human leadership.
