Extreme Heat Wave Expected Across Morocco: Temperatures Could Reach 48°C

Severe Heat Conditions Persist Throughout Morocco

As Morocco braces for an intense heat wave, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a forecast indicating that from Monday, July 6, until Sunday, July 12, 2026, the country will experience extremely high temperatures driven by hot and dry air masses emanating from the Sahara Desert. During this period, temperatures are expected to soar to as high as 48°C in several regions, particularly in the southern provinces, the southeast, the interior plains, the Saïss area, Oulmès, and the Souss region. This heat episode will also bring about relatively warm nights, with minimum temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C, limiting any respite from the heat after sunset.

Temperature Peaks and Regional Variations

On Monday, July 6, maximum temperatures will fluctuate between 40°C and 48°C in the southern provinces, southeast, and northern and central interior plains, with some areas potentially exceeding 45°C. Coastal regions and the high and middle Atlas mountains will witness milder weather, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 34°C, in contrast to the scorching 34°C to 40°C expected elsewhere. The DGM also anticipates the development of low clouds and patches of fog during the night and morning hours along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, accompanied by moderate to strong winds in the Tangier area and southern provinces, which may create localized dust storms in the Saharan regions.

As the week progresses, the hot conditions are expected to persist, particularly in the southeast and southern provinces. The minimum temperatures are likely to remain elevated, ranging from 25°C to 32°C in the interior regions, while temperatures in the Atlas and Rif mountains will be cooler, between 12°C and 18°C. Low clouds will continue to form near coastal areas, with possible fog or light drizzle in the mornings. Moderate winds will prevail, especially in the southern provinces, with potential dust storms in certain areas.

From Thursday, July 9, a gradual decrease in temperatures is anticipated across the northern and central plains and the southern provinces, leading into an eventual rise in temperatures again the following week. The DGM urges residents to exercise caution, especially in areas experiencing extreme heat, by avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and adhering to official weather advisories.
