Severe Weather Conditions Across Morocco
A severe heat wave combined with strong winds is set to impact a significant portion of Morocco this week, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels between 104 and 111 degrees Fahrenheit in the southern and southeastern regions, as reported by the country's General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM). The atmospheric conditions in the interior areas are expected to fluctuate between 95 and 104°F, while coastal regions will benefit from a sea breeze, maintaining more moderate temperatures.
This weather phenomenon is accompanied by a strong windstorm that has disrupted the state of the sea, prompting authorities to restrict swimming along nearly the entire Atlantic coastline of the country for Tuesday and Wednesday. Beaches in the southern region, such as Mirleft, El Ouatia, and Tarfaya, are displaying black flags indicating a complete ban due to extreme danger, whereas the sandy shores of Agadir, Essaouira, and Casablanca are under red flags, leaving the northern coast as the only area with yellow flags.
Forecast and Continuing Heat Alerts
Authorities also anticipate thunderstorms and localized rain showers in the High Atlas regions, alongside strong gusts of wind that could raise dust in the interior and southern areas. Forecasts suggest that high temperatures are expected to spike again in the northern and central parts of Morocco as the weekend approaches. The country has experienced several consecutive heat waves throughout May, marked by orange-level alerts, and now enters June with a similar scenario featuring active yellow warnings.
