Severe Heat Conditions Expected in Multiple Provinces

Rabat – Morocco is bracing for a significant heatwave that is set to persist for several days. According to an official weather alert issued by the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) on Monday, extreme temperatures are anticipated from Tuesday through the following Friday. The agency has declared an orange alert for the regions that will be affected by this intense heat.

The meteorologists have indicated that the scorching temperatures will predominantly impact the interior regions of the country as well as the southern provinces. In areas such as Zagora, Tata, Es-Semara, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd, temperatures are expected to soar between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Widespread Temperature Increases Across Various Regions

A broader geographical area will experience temperatures ranging from 40 to 43 degrees Celsius. This includes the provinces of Marrakech, Rehamna, Youssoufia, Béni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Errachidia, Khénifra, Boulemane, Chichaoua, Guercif, Taounate, Taza, Taroudant, Tinghir, Khouribga, Settat, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Figuig, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, and Guelmim. Consequently, not only the desert and steppe regions in the south and east but also the agriculturally rich plains in the interior, as well as key tourist hotspots like the Marrakech region, will be affected by this heatwave.

During such extreme temperatures, Moroccan authorities typically urge the public to avoid direct sunlight during midday and afternoon hours, ensure adequate hydration, and minimize outdoor physical exertion. Vulnerable groups, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses, are particularly at risk of health complications due to dehydration in these conditions.

Intense heat periods pose significant challenges to the country's public infrastructure, water supply, and agriculture, especially during the peak summer months. It remains to be seen whether this heatwave will extend beyond Friday or if temperatures will normalize over the weekend, as the DGM will continuously monitor the situation for further developments.
