Marseille Court Delivers Harsh Sentence for Drug Trafficking Leader
In a significant ruling on Friday, the Marseille criminal court sentenced Félix Bingui, known by the moniker «Le Chat», to an extensive prison term of 12 years for his role as the head of the notorious Yoda drug-trafficking clan. Bingui's apprehension took place in Morocco in 2024, following an international arrest warrant that had been issued by French authorities. Alongside 19 accomplices, he was implicated in overseeing one of the principal drug distribution centers in Marseille. Notably, Mohamed Hussein Saleh, who was characterized as Bingui's «right-hand man», was absent during the reading of the verdict and was sentenced to nine years in prison, as reported by AFP. Prosecutors had initially sought even lengthier sentences, advocating for 16 years for Bingui and 12 years for Saleh.
The court, however, opted not to impose the «two-thirds security period» that the prosecution had also requested. In addition to his lengthy prison sentence, Bingui was ordered to pay a substantial fine of 200,000 euros. The evidence presented during the trial painted a clear picture of Bingui's operations, revealing that he had been managing a significant drug-dealing hub in the northern districts of Marseille, specifically within the La Paternelle housing estate, from 2021 to 2023.
Impact of Gang Warfare on Marseille's Drug Scene
The Yoda clan's reign ultimately came to an end following a violent confrontation with the DZ Mafia, which led to a bloody war between the two rival gangs. According to AFP, Zine Eddine Belkai, identified as the «chief manager» of the Yoda clan's sales points, was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison. The remaining defendants in the case were primarily engaged in roles such as couriers, suppliers, packagers, or money launderers. Among the group, four individuals were acquitted, while others received sentences ranging up to six years in prison.
