Fes Authorities Allocate Over 14 Million Dirhams for Flood Prevention Measures

Investment in Flood Prevention Infrastructure in Fes

The authorities in Fes have earmarked a substantial budget exceeding 14.43 million dirhams for a project dedicated to protecting the city from floods associated with the Ain Smen River. This initiative, which has been launched by the Fes municipality, will unfold over the course of twelve months and will focus on the segment connecting Ben Soudah Road (Regional Road 716) to the Fes River. The project involves the construction of rectangular or trapezoidal drainage channels, crossing structures in the form of culverts, as well as access ramps for maintaining the drainage systems. This flood prevention project is a vital addition to other recently initiated projects aimed at safeguarding the city from similar threats.

Comprehensive Flood Protection Initiatives

In a related effort, the Fes-Meknes Regional Council approved a partnership agreement during its March session to enhance flood protection measures for the city against the Mehraz River, with a financial allocation of 108 million dirhams for both the first and second phases of the project. Last year alone saw the mobilization of over 300 million dirhams for structural projects focused on flood protection and the upgrading of wastewater management systems. Notably, the primary drainage system of the Fes River is being developed, with the first phase involving the construction of four kilometers of sewage pipes at a cost of 200 million dirhams. These infrastructures are expected to redirect approximately 90% of the wastewater currently flowing beneath Fes's historic city, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, thereby safeguarding this cultural treasure from environmental and structural risks associated with the drainage network. Furthermore, another project aims to complete the "Mait" and "Himer" drainage systems over a stretch of eight kilometers, with a total budget of 151 million dirhams, designed to strengthen the wastewater management system in the southern part of the city, consolidating existing networks and alleviating pressure on current drainage systems.
