Celebrating Heritage and Craftsmanship at the Fes Festival
The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music is set to inaugurate its 29th edition on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the iconic Bab al-Makina venue. This year’s opening ceremony will feature a remarkable artistic display titled **"The Emergence of the Spirit from Matter – From Heaven to Earth"**. This unique presentation combines elements of art, poetry, and choreography to honor the creative touch of traditional artisans and celebrate their essential role in the preservation of human heritage.
Aligning with the current edition's theme **“Fes and the Masters, Guardians of Craft and Heritage,”** the opening performance emphasizes the symbolic and humanitarian value of traditional crafts. It highlights the deep connection between humans and the fundamental elements of the universe, embarking on an artistic journey that flows from the sky to the earth while exploring the pathways of creativity manifested in various ancient trades.
Audiences can expect a distinctive visual and musical experience that draws inspiration from traditional workshops, where the elements of water, air, earth, and fire are transformed into timeless artistic creations. With the use of traditional artisan tools such as kilns, bellows, chisels, and potter's wheels, the narrative of human interaction with materials and their transformations over time comes to life.
This performance will also celebrate the creative hands of skilled artisans, including tanners, dyers, weavers, cobblers, tile makers, carpenters, and metalworkers. These craftsmen have upheld inherited professional traditions and played a vital role in safeguarding the cultural and historical memory of their communities. Additionally, the performance will reflect significant historical milestones in the journey of human crafts, from the discovery of silk in ancient China to the artistry of Moroccan zellige and historical mosaics.
In a symbolic scene, the Bab al-Makina space will transform into an open cosmic workshop celebrating the blacksmiths of the world, from the Moroccan desert to various regions globally, embodying the values of communication and connection between cultures and peoples.
The 29th edition will feature participation from artists and creators from Morocco and several Asian and European countries, including India, China, Central Asian nations, the Balkans, and Cambodia, in a collective celebration of Fes’s and Andalusia’s cultural heritage alongside the shared humanitarian values that unite diverse cultures.
This opening night marks the beginning of four days filled with artistic performances and cultural encounters held in some of Fes's most historic venues, featuring more than 160 artists, masters, and craftsmen from around the world, all part of a rich and multifaceted program.
The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music continues to strengthen its international status as a platform for cultural dialogue and mutual understanding among diverse traditions.
