Strategic Planning for Sustainable Waste Management

The Fes-Meknes region is embarking on an ambitious new strategic plan aimed at enhancing its wastewater and rainwater management systems. This initiative is crucial for addressing the region's demographic, urban, and industrial growth while tackling challenges posed by water stress and climate change. This plan is particularly significant as it aligns with preparations for major international events, including the upcoming World Cup in 2030.

According to information from the regional multi-service company of Fes-Meknes, a budget of approximately 22.84 million dirhams has been allocated for the development of this plan, which will encompass the municipalities of Fes and Meknes, as well as the provinces of Moulay Yacoub, Sefrou, Taounate, Boulemane, Ifrane, and El Hajeb. The comprehensive study will include an in-depth assessment of the current state of sanitation networks and facilities, updated forecasts for wastewater and rainwater flows, and identification of necessary investments to improve network performance.

Enhancing Infrastructure for Future Challenges

The primary goal of this strategic plan is to bolster the sanitation systems' capacity to manage flood risks and saturation, expand wastewater services, and ensure that discharged water meets applicable standards. Additionally, the plan will explore the potential for reusing treated wastewater and enhancing the management of industrial and artisanal wastewater by cataloging pollution sources and establishing regulations and standards for discharges into the public network.

The vision for this plan extends to 2045, with immediate interventions and priority works scheduled between 2026 and 2028. The short-term targets are set for 2030, while mid-term goals are aimed for 2035, and long-term objectives are set for 2045. This strategic initiative is expected to serve as a framework for identifying the region's investment needs in wastewater management, thereby strengthening its infrastructure readiness to accommodate urban growth, economic development, and upcoming international events.
