Fes Named Capital of Moroccan Civil Society for 2026

Fes Earns Recognition as Morocco's Civil Society Capital for 2026

In a significant initiative aimed at highlighting the vital role of civil society in Morocco and enhancing its contributions to developmental processes, the city of Fes has been designated as the Capital of Moroccan Civil Society for the year 2026. This recognition is part of a national effort to promote civil initiatives and foster a culture of participation and cooperation among citizens.

This honor comes as a result of a partnership agreement between the International Organization for Citizenship Values, Development, and Dialogue (EXO) and several government sectors, including the Ministry Delegate to the Head of Government responsible for Relations with Parliament, the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, and the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family. This initiative aligns with the royal directives encouraging civil society involvement in various development projects.

According to an official statement, the event will be organized in collaboration with the Fes Saïs Association for Cultural, Social, and Economic Development, which will coordinate the various activities and events planned for this initiative. The local actors and relevant institutions will also be mobilized to ensure the success of this landmark event.

The selection of Fes is based on several criteria, including the vibrancy and diversity of its civil society fabric, the city’s rich history in collaborative efforts, and its cultural and intellectual significance. Additionally, Fes is deeply connected to the national and spiritual values of the kingdom.

In recent years, several Moroccan cities, including Oujda, Taroudant, Salé, Laayoune, and Tetouan, have held the title of Capital of Moroccan Civil Society. This initiative aims to showcase exemplary experiences of civil society, promote the exchange of knowledge among Moroccan cities, and enhance their contributions to local development.
