The bidding criteria stipulate that the design and implementation phases must adhere to a set of environmental and social standards, ensuring that the upgraded sports infrastructure will meet the demands of international events while simultaneously enhancing the quality of life for local residents. One of the project's key objectives is for the Fes Sports Complex to receive a special certification for 'high-quality sustainable infrastructure,' achieved through a comprehensive approach that encompasses all stages of design, construction, and operation.

The environmental aspect of the project focuses on biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and improved air quality, alongside ensuring easy access to the complex's various facilities. Companies awarded the construction contracts will be held to strict environmental performance standards, including appointing a qualified environmental certification officer and providing the necessary human and technical resources to monitor sustainability compliance.

Furthermore, the project will adhere to a 'low-disruption work charter,' which includes plans for managing erosion and sediment, construction waste, and maintaining air quality during the renovation process. In terms of energy efficiency, the initiative aims to reduce consumption by at least 30% compared to standard designs. This will be accomplished through the use of energy-efficient lighting, high-performance air conditioning systems, enhanced thermal insulation, and the generation of 5 to 10% of electricity from renewable sources.

A central smart building management system will be installed to monitor energy consumption and optimize efficiency. Additionally, the project targets a water consumption reduction of at least 40% by incorporating water-saving fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation, and improved stormwater drainage systems.

To further minimize the carbon footprint of the complex, low-carbon materials such as low-carbon concrete and recycled reinforcing steel will be prioritized, with a focus on local sourcing to reduce emissions associated with transportation. The project also embraces circular economy principles by sorting construction waste for reuse, recovery, and recycling.

Special attention will be given to preserving biodiversity and integrating the sports complex into its urban surroundings while improving accessibility through public transport options and pedestrian and bicycle pathways. The revamped complex will feature modern facilities that cater to the needs of visitors, athletes, and staff, ensuring comfort, air quality, and sound quality, while also adhering to safety standards and resilience against natural and climate-related hazards.

The design will ensure that structures can withstand strong winds, in compliance with Moroccan standards for earthquake resistance. This renovation of the Fes Sports Complex is part of Morocco's broader preparations to host the 2030 World Cup in partnership with Spain and Portugal, alongside the aim of hosting various other major international sporting events.
