FIFA Adjusts Rankings Following Controversial AFCON 2025 Verdict: Morocco Rises as Senegal Challenges

FIFA Responds to CAF's Controversial Ruling

In a significant development within African football, FIFA has promptly reacted to the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) contentious decision regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This ruling has resulted in Morocco receiving a substantial boost in the world rankings, following the controversial stripping of the AFCON title from Senegal and its subsequent award to Morocco. This dramatic shift comes just two months after Senegal’s Teranga Lions celebrated their earlier victory in Rabat, which was later challenged by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) after a contentious final that ended with a decisive extra-time goal from Pape Gueye.

The CAF Appeal Board has ruled in favor of Morocco, declaring Senegal’s actions—specifically a 17-minute walk-off in protest of a late penalty—as a forfeit. As a direct consequence of this ruling, Senegal has been officially declared to have forfeited the final match, with the result now recorded as a 3-0 victory for Morocco. This decision effectively rescinds Senegal's 1-0 win on January 18 and grants the title to Morocco, which has now led to a significant overhaul in FIFA's rankings.

Morocco Climbs in FIFA Rankings Amid Controversy

Following the recent update from FIFA, Morocco has gained an impressive 18.02 points, elevating them to the eighth position globally with a total of 1754.59 points, thereby establishing them as the highest-ranked team in Africa. They now sit just 1.68 points shy of the Netherlands, who are ranked seventh. Conversely, Senegal has not experienced any change in their ranking and remains in 14th place worldwide, with 1684.85 points, securing their position as the second-ranked team on the continent. The aftermath of FIFA’s ranking update has ignited a flurry of reactions on social media from fans, reflecting the polarizing nature of this ruling.

Despite the ruling, Senegal is adamant about contesting the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Moussa Mbaye, speaking to RTS and reported by Africa Soccer, confirmed that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) is actively preparing their case, collecting necessary documentation, and formulating their arguments ahead of the impending March 27 deadline. As the focus shifts to Lausanne, all eyes will be on the CAS as it prepares to adjudicate a dispute that continues to stir strong opinions across the landscape of African football and beyond.
