FIFA Faces Investigation Over Ticket Sales for World Cup 2026

The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey, Letitia James and Jennifer Davenport, have initiated an investigation into FIFA regarding its ticket sales practices for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. This investigation focuses on eight matches scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the highly anticipated final on July 19 and the group stage match between Brazil and Morocco.

U.S. authorities are accusing the global governing body of football of employing misleading marketing strategies, with particular scrutiny on price fluctuations and the conditions under which tickets are being sold. Official requests for clarification have been sent to FIFA seeking detailed information about its ticketing operations.

Ticket Prices Under Scrutiny

According to statements from the attorneys general, several fans have reportedly experienced significant price increases after ticket sales commenced. The investigation particularly examines the use of “dynamic pricing,” a system that automatically adjusts prices based on demand. This is the first time FIFA has employed such a mechanism in World Cup history. This pricing strategy, which is already commonplace in concerts and certain American sporting events, has faced backlash from supporters of various qualified teams for several months.

Tickets for some matches involving Brazil have reportedly reached exorbitant prices on official resale platforms. Last month, tickets for a Brazilian match in Miami were listed for nearly €50,000. Jennifer Davenport has also accused FIFA of intentionally limiting the number of seats available at the start of sales, which would contribute to driving up the prices of subsequent ticket categories. "FIFA has turned the ticket purchasing process into a convoluted journey filled with confusion, artificial scarcity, and unaffordable prices," stated the New Jersey attorney general.

A Longstanding Controversy Surrounding World Cup 2026

For several months, FIFA's pricing policies have been under persistent criticism. Some premium tickets for the 2026 World Cup final have reportedly exceeded $10,000 during initial sales phases. In defense, FIFA, led by president Gianni Infantino, claims that the pricing strategy correlates with the expected high demand for this edition hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Infantino mentioned an "absolutely crazy" enthusiasm surrounding the event.

MetLife Stadium, located in New Jersey, is set to host eight matches during the tournament, including several major fixtures in the opening round and the final on July 19, 2026. As of now, U.S. authorities have not announced any sanctions or legal proceedings against FIFA, but investigations continue regarding the conditions of ticket sales and resales.
