FIFA Imposes Partial Stadium Closure on Mexico Ahead of Ghana Match

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has announced a significant sanction imposed by FIFA, which will impact the upcoming friendly match against Ghana. This penalty involves a partial closure of the seating capacity at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc, set to take place on May 22nd. The decision stems from discriminatory chants that occurred during matches against Ecuador and Paraguay in November 2025.

According to the FMF, in compliance with FIFA's ruling, certain areas within the stadium have been blocked off from public sale, adhering to the regulations established by FIFA and the operational authorities of the stadium. Images released by the federation illustrate the blocked sections, which have been adorned with banners aiming to eradicate the discriminatory chants that continue to affect the Mexican National Team.

This latest sanction adds to a series of penalties the FMF has faced in previous years for similar issues. However, it stands out as one of the most severe, as it restricts the sale of specific tickets. With the World Cup approaching, this FIFA punishment raises significant concerns. Should these discriminatory acts persist during upcoming matches, the Mexican team, popularly known as El Tricolor, may face even harsher penalties that could adversely affect their performance in the tournament.
