The FIFA has taken significant steps in response to recent controversies involving players, particularly focusing on the incident involving Gianluca Prestianni from Benfica and the events during the Africa Cup final. Following a request from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has decided that players who cover their mouths during disputes with opponents will face the penalty of a red card during the upcoming World Cup this summer. This announcement was made by IFAB on Tuesday after a special meeting held in Vancouver, Canada.
The controversy surrounding Gianluca Prestianni stemmed from allegations that he racially insulted Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid during a Champions League playoff match, where he was seen pulling his shirt over his mouth. Infantino stated, "It must be assumed that a player has said something he should not have said—otherwise, he would not have needed to cover his mouth." He emphasized that implementing such a measure is crucial if we are to take our fight against racism seriously.
It remains to be seen whether this new regulation will be applied in other competitions, such as the Bundesliga or the Champions League, as that decision is currently left to the respective organizers.
In addition to this, IFAB has adjusted its rules in light of the incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup final between Morocco and Senegal. After a late penalty was awarded to Morocco, Senegal's players left the field in protest during the chaotic final held in Rabat in mid-January. The match resumed only after a prolonged interruption, and Senegal eventually won in extra time, although they later had their title revoked by the CAF.
According to IFAB's statement, the referee now has the discretion to issue a red card to any player who leaves the field in protest against a referee's decision. This new rule, which will also be applied during the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, extends to all officials who encourage players to exit the field. Furthermore, any team that causes the abandonment of a match will automatically lose the game.
The decision against FC Bayern was made after a video review and has sparked controversy. The successful coach from Munich is suspended for the upcoming clash against PSG and will be replaced by Aaron Danks. Meanwhile, the national striker suffered an injury over the weekend, and the duration of his absence remains uncertain.
