Film Team Responds to Controversy Surrounding 'Aisha Can't Fly'

The team behind the film "Aisha Can't Fly" has officially addressed the recent controversy regarding the filming conditions of a particular scene, emphasizing their full respect for the experience of the actress who spoke out about the incident. They acknowledged her right to express her feelings and the challenges she faced during the filming process.

In a statement released by director Mourad Mustafa, he stated: "We write this statement based on our conviction that sensitive matters require a safe and calm space that allows for open discussion, listening, and verification, away from the pressures of the moment and preconceived judgments." He further noted, "We respect the actress's experience and feelings, and we understand that some situations may be perceived differently by individuals. Anyone involved in the project deserves a safe environment where they can express their feelings or objections without fear of pressure or defamation."

The statement clarified that the incident in question involved an actress who participated in only one scene of the film, and not the lead actress. The team highlighted the importance of distinguishing between the original post made by the actress and any additions or interpretations that may have arisen later on social media. They mentioned that misinformation and interpretations not included in her initial post had contributed to escalating tensions and confusion surrounding the issue.

The statement continued: "Respecting the actress's experience does not contradict the necessity of reaching an accurate and comprehensive understanding of what transpired. Fairness requires listening to all parties, examining the facts, and differentiating between intention and outcome, as well as what was previously agreed upon. Therefore, we call upon prominent figures and experts in the film industry in Egypt, alongside legal advocates and organizations focused on women's rights and safe work environments, to initiate the formation of an independent and neutral committee to investigate the facts."

They suggested that this committee operate within a secure and confidential framework that protects all parties involved, allowing them to share testimonies and review original materials related to the controversial scene, ensuring that any materials have not been tampered with or technically altered.

The team expressed their full readiness to cooperate with any agreed-upon independent committee and to provide necessary materials and information while respecting the privacy of all parties and their right to express themselves without facing defamation or pressure. Their goal is not to defend the film's image or to pre-judge any party, but rather to seek the truth and learn from any mistakes or shortcomings that might be revealed through the investigation, while working towards developing clearer mechanisms for consent, psychological and physical safety, communication, and grievance procedures on set.

Moreover, they hope that the independent committee will announce the outcomes and key findings of this investigation to the public and supporting institutions, while ensuring privacy protection and maintaining clarity and transparency, regardless of the results or mistakes that may be discovered, in order to base judgments on facts, evidence, and responsible listening to all parties involved.

In conclusion, the team expressed their appreciation for the public's concern and dedication to protecting those working in the film industry as well as valuing every voice that called for listening, verification, and fairness. As part of the Egyptian and Arab cinema industry, they are committed to contributing to the establishment of a safe and just environment for everyone, fostering an independent cinema rooted in respect and responsibility, and enabling collective learning, development, and the enhancement of the industry.

The film "Aisha Can't Fly", directed by Mourad Mustafa, has recently achieved significant success, having won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film at the Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival in Algeria. This triumph continues the film's remarkable journey on the international cinematic stage.

Just days ago, the film was awarded the Jury Prize at the 26th Cyprus International Film Festival, reinforcing its strong presence across various global festivals.

In the coming period, the film is set to premiere in several Arab countries, including Lebanon, Tunisia, and Morocco, following its screenings in several European and American countries back in April.

A joint production involving Egypt, France, Germany, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Sudan, the film narrates the story of "Aisha", a 26-year-old Sudanese woman working in healthcare who lives in a neighborhood in Cairo. She finds herself amidst tensions between African migrants and local gangs.

Aisha's life becomes complicated as she navigates a mysterious relationship with a young Egyptian chef, while facing pressure from a gang that blackmails her into engaging in an unethical deal in exchange for protection and housing. This leads her to confront psychological and human conflicts that push her to a critical turning point between dreams and reality.

The film features performances from Pollyanna Simon, Egyptian rapper Ziad Zaza, Emad Ghoneim, and Mamdouh Saleh. The editing was done by Mohamed Mamdouh, while the cinematography was handled by Mustafa Al-Kashef, who previously collaborated with the director on his short film "Eissa". The team also included costume designer Naira Al-Dahshouri, sound engineer Mustafa Shaaban, and production designer Eman Al-Obai.
