Final Judgment on African Title Dispute
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is anticipated to announce its final ruling regarding the contentious African Cup of Nations 2025 title dispute between Morocco and Senegal within the next few days. This decision comes after Senegal lodged an appeal against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for stripping them of the title and awarding it to Morocco.
Background of the Dispute
This situation stems from the final match held on January 18, 2026, in Rabat, where a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco in the dying moments of extra time, leading to a significant uproar among Senegalese players. Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, even instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest, a few of whom complied, resulting in a stoppage of the match for 17 minutes. The game resumed after team captain Sadio Mané intervened. Ultimately, Senegal managed to win the match 1-0 in overtime, despite Ibrahim Díaz missing the penalty for Morocco.
In March 2026, CAF's Appeals Committee ruled Senegal the loser with a score of 3-0, thus awarding the title to Morocco due to regulatory violations concerning leaving the pitch without the referee's consent. The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently filed an appeal with CAS on March 25, 2026, seeking to overturn this decision.
CAS heard the case during a session on October 8, 2026, which lasted over five hours and took place behind closed doors in Lausanne, Switzerland. The court is expected to deliver its verdict soon, although an exact date for the announcement has not been provided, as reported by the BBC.
Matthieu Rib, CAS's general director, indicated that a decision would likely come a few days after the conclusion of the hearing, emphasizing that discussions would focus on procedural and legal aspects. He assured that the court aims to issue a ruling as quickly as possible following the hearing.
With both parties awaiting the final judgment, the outcome will determine whether Morocco retains the title or if the decision is overturned, potentially reaffirming Senegal's victory on the field. Abdoulaye Sow, the general secretary of the Senegalese Football Federation, expressed confidence in his team's position, underscoring the importance of fair application of sports law for the dignity of African football.
