The Ongoing Dispute Over the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Final
The climax of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final controversy between Morocco and Senegal is nearing resolution as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has concluded its hearings in Lausanne, Switzerland. The arbitration panel is now deliberating on the matter with the intention of delivering a verdict regarding the dispute.
According to reports from the Senegalese news outlet, Senenews, the decision from the CAS is expected to be announced between October 18 and October 22. This legal tussle stems from a contentious final held in Rabat, Morocco, earlier this year, where Senegal initially claimed victory with a score of 1-0 on the pitch.
However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) controversially declared Senegal the loser and awarded the title to Morocco, prompting the Senegalese Football Federation to challenge this decision at the CAS. The crux of the dispute revolves around a temporary exit of Senegalese players from the field in protest against one of the referee's decisions, after which they returned to continue the match.
Senegal's side is arguing based on Article 5 of the Laws of the Game, which pertains to the authority of the referee, while Morocco is relying on Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which were the basis for the CAF's appeals committee's decision. Mathieu Reeb, the director general of the CAS, acknowledged the public's long wait for a resolution regarding the title and clarified that the procedural timetable and hearing dates had been agreed upon by all parties involved. He assured that the Tribunal is working diligently to provide a well-reasoned decision promptly following the conclusion of the hearings.
