German Talents Shine Ahead of U17 World Championship

Fiona Itgenshorst from Nieukerk and Mia Giesen from Sevelen are set to embark on an exciting journey as they prepare for the U17 World Cup in Morocco. The two talented footballers, representing Borussia Mönchengladbach, showcased their skills in a recent match against Mexico, where they helped secure a convincing 3-0 victory. This match served as a final warm-up before the highly anticipated tournament, scheduled to take place from October 17 to November 7.

In front of an audience of 1,281 spectators at the SIBRE Sports Center Haarwasen in Haiger, Hesse, the reigning European champions demonstrated their dominance on the field. Mexico, known for its strong U17 teams, was also preparing for the World Cup, but the German squad, under the guidance of head coach Sabine Loderer, proved too formidable. Both Itgenshorst and Giesen, who played vital roles in their European Championship triumph in Northern Ireland, were included in the starting lineup, showcasing their importance to the team.

The match began with a swift double strike from Germany, setting the tone early on. Laura Dilfinge opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a goal from a corner kick, followed just a minute later by Clara Choisy, who capitalized on a cross from Marie Kleemann to double the lead. In the 66th minute, substitute Mia Kuhn took advantage of a misplayed back pass from the Mexican defense to seal the game with a third goal, finishing the match at 3-0.

After the match, coach Loderer expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, describing it as a "good final test before the World Championship." She noted that her team controlled the game for most parts and displayed a versatile offensive strategy. The successful conclusion of their preparations has only heightened the anticipation for the upcoming tournament in Morocco.

For Fiona Itgenshorst and Mia Giesen, this marks the beginning of a thrilling World Cup adventure. Following their shared triumph at the European Championship last May, the young national players from the Niederrhein region are now poised for another significant international challenge in Morocco.
