FiSahara Film Festival Concludes with a Celebration of Sahrawi Culture and Solidarity

Shaheed El Hafed, May 2, 2026 (SPS) – The 19th edition of the Sahara International Film Festival, known as “FiSahara,” culminated in a grand closing ceremony on Sunday night in the wilaya of Auserd. This year's festival placed a significant focus on the pivotal role that cinema plays in bolstering the Sahrawi people's struggle and advocating for their rightful cause. The event was graced by the presence of high-profile attendees, including the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, alongside members of the National Secretariat, government officials, and delegations from supportive nations, all of whom share a keen interest in cultural matters.

The closing ceremony was marked by heartfelt speeches that underscored the festival's significance and its roots in solidarity with the Sahrawi community. Organizers took the opportunity to express their gratitude towards all contributors and participants who played a vital role in the festival's success.

Throughout the week-long festival, a diverse array of films from various countries and continents were showcased, providing a platform for cultural exchange and dialogue. The ceremony also recognized several organizations and individuals who were instrumental in making the 19th edition a success, including the representation of the Polisario Front in Spain, the wilaya of Auserd, and the dedicated Spanish solidarity movement.

Among the highlights of the festival was the announcement of the winning film, “Todo lo que fuimos,” produced by the renowned Javier Bardem, which took home the first prize. Additionally, in the cultural competition segment, the wilaya of Dakhla proudly secured the top position in the traditional “Mahsar” contest, further showcasing the rich heritage and artistic expressions of the Sahrawi people.

FiSahara continues to serve as a vital platform for exploring Sahrawi culture, which faces persistent challenges of erasure and marginalization due to the Moroccan occupation. The festival not only highlights this cultural richness but also aims to attract new supporters and advocates for the Sahrawi national cause, thereby fostering a global understanding of their struggle.
