Formation of a New Coalition Advocating for the Recovery of Occupied Moroccan Territories
The recent events surrounding Ceuta, a territory occupied by Spain, have ignited significant reactions from various Moroccan civil and human rights organizations. These events were marked by the successful arrival of tens of thousands of individuals, including many Moroccans as well as individuals from diverse nationalities, to this contested enclave. In response to the political and historical complexities surrounding this issue, the Moroccan Organization for Citizenship and Defense of Territorial Integrity, alongside the National and International Volunteer Committee for the Green March, have initiated discussions to establish an independent civil framework aimed at addressing such critical files.
This proposed entity has been named the "National and International Coordination for the Demand to Recover the Occupied Cities of Ceuta and Melilla and Eastern Sahara." According to a statement issued regarding this initiative, the coordination's mission will focus on the pursuit of full territorial integrity while promoting academic research, dialogue, and peaceful advocacy concerning the issues related to Morocco's territorial unity. This approach will be grounded in respect for legal frameworks and the utilization of non-violent means to achieve its goals.
The statement further indicated that additional details regarding this new framework, its precise objectives, and operational mechanisms will be announced in due course, following a series of consultations and meetings with various stakeholders both within Morocco and abroad. Existing civil organizations that advocate for the recovery of Ceuta and Melilla, among other Moroccan territories occupied by Spain, include the National Committee for the Liberation of Ceuta and Melilla and its affiliated islands, led by Yahya Yahya, a former parliamentary advisor and mayor of Beni Ansar.
