New Political Coalition Announced in Morocco
On Monday evening, Morocco witnessed the announcement of a new governmental majority formed by four political parties: the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the Independence Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Progress and Socialism Party. This coalition aims to propose a selection of ministers who are not only competent but also possess political acumen, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics. The goal is to create a cohesive and powerful government capable of swiftly implementing the government program that is being developed.
According to a statement received by "Al-Quds Al-Arabi," following the appointment of Ms. Fatima Zahra Mansouri, the National Coordinator of the PAM, as the head of the new government, extensive political consultations commenced. These discussions involve various parties represented in the parliament and focus on addressing the numerous challenges and constraints that Morocco faces. The coalition seeks to establish a robust political majority that is aware of the complex internal challenges and multiple external pressures, capable of effectively responding to the citizens' expectations regarding improved living conditions, the strengthening of freedoms and rights, social justice, equity, and economic prosperity.
Historical Context and Future Aspirations
The governmental majority's statement emphasized the significance of the political consultations led by the newly appointed Prime Minister. These discussions took place within the context of national and international priorities and were informed by the will of the people expressed during the legislative elections held on September 23. This election marked a historical milestone, as it resulted in the appointment of a female Prime Minister for the first time in Morocco's democratic journey, symbolizing a profound shift with strong implications for the nation's future.
After two rounds of responsible political consultations, the parties demonstrated a high level of national responsibility and political awareness regarding the challenges facing Morocco today. The formation of a cohesive political majority aims to produce a strong political government characterized by ideological and political alignment, unified in their reform vision and committed to it. This government majority aims to support His Majesty the King’s ambition to build a progressive Morocco that advances rapidly while reinforcing democratic foundations, good governance, social justice, and economic production capabilities.
The legislative elections held on September 23 resulted in the PAM securing the first position with 97 seats. To ensure an absolute majority necessary for the government formation, a minimum of 198 seats out of 395 in the House of Representatives is required. Consequently, the leading party has allied with the Independence Party (65 seats), the Socialist Union (26 seats), and the Progress and Socialism Party (19 seats), bringing the total number of seats in the majority to 207, surpassing the threshold for an absolute majority.
