France and Morocco Strengthen Ties After Years of Tension

Strengthening Franco-Moroccan Relations

In a significant diplomatic development, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu recently embarked on an official visit to Rabat, Morocco. This trip marks a pivotal moment as it is his first overseas engagement since taking office, highlighting Morocco's importance in the context of France's foreign relations. The visit is viewed as a critical step towards mending the long-standing tensions that have characterized the relationship between Paris and Rabat over recent years.

The French-Moroccan governmental conference held on July 16, 2026, is particularly noteworthy as it is the first such meeting between the two nations since 2019. The conference featured the participation of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch of Morocco, his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu, and twelve ministers from both countries. During this session, eleven cooperation agreements were signed, focusing on various sectors including transportation, water resource management, electricity connectivity, energy, economic collaboration, and interpersonal exchanges.

A New Era of Collaboration

During a joint press conference following the summit, Prime Minister Lecornu expressed optimism about the current state of Franco-Moroccan relations, suggesting that they are entering a particularly positive phase. This renewed optimism is underscored by a recent statement from French President Emmanuel Macron, who publicly endorsed Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region in 2024. Lecornu emphasized France's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Morocco, particularly in critical areas such as security, counter-terrorism, and energy initiatives.

Prime Minister Akhannouch echoed these sentiments, stating that the relationship between Morocco and France is now built on a foundation of "shared strategic vision, restored trust, and common ambitions." This visit comes amidst new allegations from an international media coalition claiming that Morocco utilized the Israeli-developed Pegasus spyware to monitor numerous French officials, including Lecornu himself. Nevertheless, Morocco has vigorously denied these allegations, and both Paris and Rabat have reiterated that the visit aimed to bolster trust and expand strategic collaboration despite the controversies surrounding the Pegasus incident.
