France Returns 72 Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Teeth to Morocco

France Repatriates Ancient Dinosaur Fossils to Morocco

In a significant development reflecting international cooperation in cultural heritage protection, France has officially returned a collection of nine dinosaur fossils, including teeth, to Morocco. These fossils date back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 66 to 72 million years ago, and consist of remnants from extinct marine reptiles alongside teeth from species closely related to crocodiles, indigenous to the Moroccan geological basin.

The repatriation ceremony, attended by Mehdi Bensaid, Morocco's Minister of Communication, Youth, and Culture, alongside his French counterpart, embodies the collaborative spirit between the two nations in combating the illicit trafficking of cultural assets. The fossils were originally seized by French customs in February 2025 during an illegal trafficking attempt in Menton, France. This attempt involved a freight truck transporting the fossils from Spain to Italy, highlighting ongoing challenges in the preservation of natural and geological heritage.

This restitution is the result of meticulous coordination between Moroccan authorities and French officials, illustrating their shared commitment to safeguarding cultural and natural heritage for future generations. Such initiatives not only serve to protect valuable historical artifacts but also promote awareness and education regarding the importance of preserving our planet's rich geological history.
