Francophonie's Election Observation Mission Arrives in Morocco
On September 21, 2026, in response to an official request from Moroccan authorities, Louise Mushikiwabo, the Secretary-General of the Francophonie, dispatched an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to oversee the legislative elections scheduled for September 23, 2026, in Morocco. This mission is led by André-Magnus Ekoumou, the Ambassador of Cameroon to France, and includes prominent figures such as the President of the High Court of Justice and a member of the Constitutional Court of Benin, a Member of Parliament from Canada's House of Commons, and various experts from member states and governments of the organization.
The delegation will be present in Morocco from September 16 to 25, engaging with key stakeholders and institutions involved in the electoral process. This will include discussions with political party leaders participating in the elections and representatives from civil society. Furthermore, the mission will interact with both national and international electoral missions, as well as bilateral and multilateral partners operating in the region.
This EOM will operate in accordance with the provisions set forth in the Bamako Declaration, which emphasizes the importance of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. On election day, mission members will visit select polling centers and voting stations across the Kingdom of Morocco to observe the electoral operations firsthand.
Following the elections, the mission will release preliminary findings and a comprehensive report detailing their observations, which will be shared with Moroccan authorities.
The Francophonie comprises 90 states and governments, including 53 full members, 5 associate members, and 32 observers.
