French Singer Kendji Girac Faces Boycott Call Ahead of Rabat Concert

Kendji Girac's Upcoming Concerts and the Boycott Controversy

French singer Kendji Girac is at the center of a significant controversy as he prepares for his concerts in Rabat on April 29 and in Casablanca on May 2, part of his tour titled "The Unforgettable Show." This controversy arises from a call for boycott initiated by the Moroccan Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott (MACBI), which has surfaced on social media platforms ahead of his performances. The MACBI has criticized Girac for his past concerts in Tel Aviv, collaborations with Israeli artists, and certain public statements perceived as favorable to Israel. The group argues that cultural normalization with Israel contributes to the erasure of its alleged crimes against the Palestinian people.

Defending Artistic Expression Amidst Political Criticism

In response to the boycott call, Kenza Cheddadi, the producer of the concerts, has vehemently denied the accusations against Girac, asserting that he has never publicly taken a stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She emphasized that Girac has performed in Morocco multiple times without any previous controversy, highlighting that these events are purely artistic in nature and devoid of political implications. The controversy seems to stem from Girac's remarks during a concert in Tel Aviv in the summer of 2022, where he expressed a connection between the Romani people and the Jewish community. This sentiment had previously drawn criticism from organizations like BDS France, which had called for the cancellation of his concert at that time. Furthermore, his collaboration with Israeli singer Roer Adam on the song "Oh! Prends mon âme," which reportedly incorporates elements of the Israeli national anthem, continues to fuel the backlash against him.

Despite the ongoing criticism, both concerts are currently scheduled to proceed as planned. A representative from MACBI noted that many concert-goers may not be aware of Girac's ties to Israel, indicating that their role is to inform the public so that attendees can make educated decisions regarding their participation. The situation has sparked a broader discussion about the intersection of art and politics, particularly in relation to cultural figures engaging with contentious geopolitical issues.
