In a distressing incident that unfolded in April, a couple from Beaune, France, was swindled out of nearly €25,000 during their vacation in Marrakech. Victims of a well-orchestrated scam, they now accuse their bank of providing misleading reassurances before ultimately refusing to reimburse their significant losses. The ordeal began on April 3 when Valérie and her husband found themselves in a villa, confronted by individuals promising to refund their excursion costs. Suspicious of the payment terminal they encountered, Valérie reached out to her bank back in France. A representative on the line assured her that the transaction was merely a standard banking hold and posed no risks. This false sense of security, which ironically resulted in €148 in phone charges, led the couple to insert three credit cards into the machine without a second thought.
Upon returning to their hotel, the harsh reality set in as they discovered that their cards had vanished and fraudulent transfers had drained their accounts of €24,400. The situation escalated when both banks involved rejected their requests for compensation. One bank, in a written response, cited a security data breach as justification for denying a charge of €6,882. This financial shock has forced Valérie's husband, aged 59, to postpone his retirement plans significantly.
The Elaborate Scam: A Call for Action
The couple's misfortune began with a routine phone call offering a promotional stay for €600. Once in Marrakech, they enjoyed luxurious amenities until they were approached by a woman named Cathy, who claimed to be a quality auditor. Gaining their trust, Cathy directed them to the aforementioned villa, adorned with logos of major travel companies, where a fraudulent banker was positioned to finalize their entrapment. Despite the trauma of their experience, Valérie refused to succumb to despair. Through the Signal Arnaques platform, she discovered that other victims from Paris and Saint-Raphaël had fallen prey to the same tactics. In a bid to unite the victims, she established a WhatsApp group that includes a dozen identified individuals. Following a formal complaint lodged with the Beaune gendarmerie, the investigation has since been handed over to local authorities, as reported by bladi.net.
