Friouato Cave Ready for Visitor Reception
According to reports from various sources, the Friouato Cave, located in the Taza region approximately 30 kilometers south of the city of Taza, is poised to welcome visitors after years of closure. The cave, recognized as one of the oldest and deepest in Morocco and the African continent, is scheduled for an official inauguration on July 27, 2026, following its closure due to a tragic incident.
A reliable source from the Regional Agency for Project Implementation (AREP) under the Fès-Meknès Region Council confirmed to the online newspaper Hespress that the restoration and safety measures for Friouato Cave have been completed according to the predetermined timeline and guidelines. The project began in December 2023 and has now been handed over to the relevant local authorities for management.
As reported, the cave has been secured in compliance with stringent international standards regarding facility quality and safety protocols, ensuring a comfortable and secure environment for visitors and tourists alike. A representative from the Moroccan Association for Caving and Mountain Tourism in Taza has also indicated that the association's president has received confirmation regarding the imminent opening of the cave and its newly enhanced facilities.

The extensive safety enhancements at Friouato Cave, which reaches depths of 130 meters, have necessitated a budget exceeding 12 million dirhams, as stated by project officials. The primary objectives of these improvements are to promote mountain and caving tourism while safeguarding visitors from potential rock falls, a concern that arose after a previous fatal incident led to the cave's closure.
Members of the Moroccan Association for Caving and Mountain Tourism in Taza are eagerly anticipating this reopening, which is expected to rejuvenate tourism in the region. It is believed that the reopening of Friouato Cave, a unique historical, geological, and tourist landmark for caving enthusiasts, will breathe new life into Taza's tourism sector and stimulate economic growth in the area. The cave has historically attracted around 10,000 visitors annually.
