Nina Ottevanger and her husband Ilyass have transformed their lives by purchasing a dilapidated riad in Morocco and turning it into a thriving surf hotel, the Ilyana Surfhouse. Their journey began over a decade ago when Nina, then a student from the Netherlands, traveled to Rabat with friends and serendipitously met Ilyass during a surf lesson. This initial connection blossomed into a long-distance relationship, with Nina returning to Rabat multiple times as she completed her studies in international tourism and leisure management.
In 2016, the couple took significant steps towards combining their passions. Ilyass managed a surf camp on Morocco's Atlantic coast, while Nina found an internship at a nearby surf camp. Their shared experiences and dreams of creating a surf business began to take shape, leading them to establish Ilyana as a surf school. However, the challenges of splitting their time between the Netherlands and Morocco soon became apparent, prompting them to seek a permanent solution.
Reviving a Traditional Moroccan Riad
In 2024, the couple embarked on a quest to find a riad along the ocean side of Rabat's medina, aiming to offer their guests easy access to the surf. They discovered a rundown property that had been abandoned for over 20 years, complete with stunning traditional architecture but lacking modern amenities. Despite its condition, they saw immense potential and decided to invest in its restoration, financing the purchase partly with their savings and loans from family and friends.
With the help of Nina's father, who had experience in similar renovations, they meticulously planned and managed the restoration process, collaborating with local craftsmen. After five months of hard work and an investment of approximately €75,000 (around $86,800), they welcomed their first guests in October 2025. The Ilyana Surfhouse now features five guest rooms accommodating up to 16 people, with rates starting at 500 Moroccan dirhams (approximately $53), which includes meals prepared by Ilyass's family.
Embracing a New Lifestyle
The couple's venture into hospitality has not only allowed them to pursue their passion for surfing but has also greatly simplified their lifestyle. Living in Rabat during the winter months, they enjoy a close-knit community of friends and a more relaxed daily routine. While the cost of living in Rabat is on the rise, they find that their simpler lifestyle enables them to save more while making lasting memories with friends at the beach.
They chose Rabat for its vibrant surf scene, favoring the intimate atmosphere of the water where surfers share waves without feeling crowded. Ilyass and Nina are committed to showcasing a genuine Moroccan lifestyle rather than an idealized surfer's paradise. As they navigate the challenges of running a business together, they also prioritize their relationship, ensuring they carve out time for each other amidst their busy schedules.
